Food & Garden

The garden at the rear of the Anglican rectory, 9 St Johns Avenue, is
an example of the once ample urban backyard – where there was plenty
of room for fruit trees, chooks and a game of cricket. Most of these big
backyards have disappeared from our inner city leaving little green space
for inhabitants to enjoy.

Fortunately, St Johns Community Orchard has been saved from
development. The Lenah Links community group negotiated with the
church to take out a lease on the garden, which relieves them of the
task of maintaining a large block. It is in an ideal position for local residents from the surrounding suburbs to come and relax, grow some food and get to know the neighbours.

The garden has a lovely ambience with a mature walnut tree providing
shade for summer picnics, an old chook shed (in need of a makeover) plus
an assortment of fruit trees including apricots, nectarines, apples, peaches
and a mulberry tree.

On the last Sunday of every month, we light the pizza oven and have a
wood fired pizza after some gardening.

Come along anytime from 11:30am to 3pm.
